Council was first invited to the Garden show in 2004 and successfully participated
every year expect 2010.
This event is one of the most prominent 'green' displays in South Africa with an
average attendance of some 23000 which includes foreigners.
This participation assists us in developing our creativity which enables us to implement
these ideas practically in municipal areas. There is also the interaction between
ourselves and other municipalities and even private landscape architects. This interaction
also comes in the form of other stand builders assistance. Seeing ideas from other
participants and their interpretation of the given theme.
Each year a theme is given to the participants and develop ideas around the theme.
We try to match the theme to promote our municipal area and province as depicted
this year with the backdrop of the waterfall in the National Botanical Gardens and
the Three Rondawels.
An enormous amount of planning goes into this, requiring the sourcing and purchasing
of hard landscaping elements, other elements and requirements including additional
plant material. This also requires prior collection of seeds etc and prebuilding
of certain elements that will feature in the design.
This is all taken from the draft design which the Horticulturists and the other members
have planned and all ideas taken into consideration.
Winning the Gold award gives us encouragement and that our abilities and talents
are recognised and display our expertise including exposure for some of the junior
staff. Also this gives improved unity within the team and even within the Department
as a whole. The added benefit is that the municipality can compete with the other
metros, municipalities, private entities and exposure to the general public, thus
marketing and encouraging tourism in Mbombela and Mpumalanga.
